SUSAN JOHNSON MEMORIAL/MISSION BAY BASS TOURNAMENT

Saturday, February 23, 2013 - It was cold; ice on the truck window and on the stern of the “Copout” at 4:30 AM. We met everyone at South Shores Launch Ramp in Mission Bay. Bill Hokstad’s crew had some “Cop Food” and I had a glazed one and supplied some hot coffee. Even with this warming repast I still had trouble tying the knot to replace some line on William Proctors’ Spinning reel. Al Staz’s engine wouldn’t start and his crew (Tyler Robinson and Kevin Anderson) returned to fish and compete on their Kayaks. A total of 18 anglers fished the tourna-ment including 1 junior angler, 7 boats and 3 kayaks. Richard and Zella Burk provided gourmet black bean chili, hot chicken legs and rich desserts at the weigh-in. John Otto (who is doing and looking much better) took the photographs. Louis Almeida did the set-up and helped with the weigh-in using the table scale which reads in pounds and ounces.

Steve Johnson, last year’s winner, could not fish the tournament this year because of prior obligations. Steve brought the perennial plaque to be presented to this year’s winner. Steve had laminated the back of the plaque with some photographs of Susan where she was happiest, fishing on Steve’s boat.

Susan was sadly taken from us two years ago. She was president of the San Diego Anglers in 2002 and joined the club with her husband Steve in 1998. Susan was always a positive influence in the club and a good friend of everyone she met. Susan was on the board of directors in 2000 and it was her idea to have a Bay Bass Tournament on Mission Bay. The first Mission Bay Tournament was in November of 2000. The tourna-ment has been one of the most popular and highly attended since.

HALIBUT TOURNAMENT

Saturday, April 13, 2013 - Well we finally had a Halibut tournament after a two year hiatus. We had decent weather and a great meal prepared by Zella and Richard Burk. The tournament was well attended with over 30 club members showing up for the weigh-in and BBQ afterwards Well here are the results. Yes, there was only one Halibut caught by club member Tim Gunter and he did not even enter the jackpot, so the jackpot was held by a random drawing, with Richard Burk taking the jackpot prize.
