2009 Day at the Dock

During these difficult economic times, it's comforting to know that YOUhave the opportunity for a very cool free t-shirt with great fish art on theback while additionally reaping the warm rewards of helping childrencatch - what is often times, their first fish. Day @ the Docks is a largeparticipation event for our club, second only to the Open Bay Bass Tournament. We share duty at the mackerel pens with our erstwhile Motherclub- San Diego Rod and Reel. SDR&R, together with H&M Landingprovide the rods & reels, bait, hooks and such; we provide 20 volunteersto assist kids, who are allowed to catch 3 fish each at the Fisherman'sLanding mackerel pens. Volunteers can pick 1 of 4 - 2 hour time slotsstarting at 9amApril 19th. Rod & reel club members man the pens @Point Loma and H&M; mackerel are generously provided by EveringhamBros Bait Co. In past years, we have been asked by parents where theycould purchase fishing rods for their kids after the wide-eyed tykes hadgotten slathery-stoked on fishing at the pens. That amounts to new fishing-fanatics born before your eyes and possibly, at your hand. Ask anyonewho has done this in the past and they will tell you how much funand how rewarding it can be - as long as you don't get pinned there allday. That's why I've broken the periods into 2 hours slots and why weneed 20 warm bodies. Junior club members are our greatest asset for thisevent; please step forward if you can. We also need additional membersto people our booth in the parking lot. It touches the ground immediatelysouth of the area where the Fisherman's Landing boats pile their fishwhen returning from a long range trip, and looking at the mackerel pens.I'll be there all day directing traffic and will have sodas and water for all.H&M provides quality t-shirts with great graphics; I need your size atsign-up, will pick up shirts prior to event to have at our booth so no onemisses out. I'll have a GREEN BALLOON at the March meeting tomark the sign-up table. See you there.......John D

Warriors on the Water

On Thursday September 18th, we are having a fun day on the water with a group of wounded soldiers on loan to us for the day, from Balboa Naval Hospital. The guys in the hospital get "cabin fever" during their stay here in town and are very excited to be able to get a day outside of the hospital. They can only watch so much TV and play only so many video games before they get bored!! That's where the San Diego Anglers come's in.

Ryan Bostion, the owner of the boat "San Diego" at Seaforth Landing, has generously gave us the boat for the day to take the guys fishing. All we had to do was pay the wages of the crew and the very expensive fuel for the day. Club Member Dave McMullen stepped up to the plate and got his company, Ocean Science International, to donate $1000 toward the cause! Way to go Dave!!!!!

Now to pay for the one day fishing Licences. The DFG makes no provisions for free fishing licenses for this type of event. The hat was passed at the August general meeting and the generous club members donated enough to cover the licenses! Outstanding!!!!!!!

Now we just need a little volunteer help for the day. If you haven't all ready signed up on the volunteer list that was passed during the August meeting, you have one more chance. Debbie Patenaude will have the list at the September meeting. If you can help during the week, see Debbie at the meeting!!!!!!

The fishing and weather has been great the last month. Lets just hope it continues for the guys!

Below is the Thank You letter received for taking

the Soldiers fishing for the day!

Dear Mr. Patenaude,

Armed Services YMCA would like to thank you for inviting the patients of Naval Medical Center to enjoy an exciting day of Sport Boat fishing. It was such a unique and enjoyable experience, allowing the patients to get outdoors and participate in something that was truly entertaining.

Active duty military are committed to defending our nation and as a result they are put in harms way. While in treatment at Naval Medical Center, the road to recovery can be a long and difficult one for many patients attached to Medical Hold. Community support is crucial and provides a great morale boost for patients.

Armed Services YMCA office at Naval Medical Center offers a variety of programs and services specifically for active duty patients and their families. Partnering with caring organizations such as San Diego Anglers is fun for all involved- volunteers and participants alike. We received great 'feedback from the service men and women who attended your event that day, and it brought a huge smile to their faces! As well as the great prizes and t-shirts!

Armed Services YMCA began operating at Naval Medical Center in 1982. Our mission is to provide support to the military, which we have been doing for over 80 years in San Diego. There are no costs or fees for our programs; there are no restrictions on ways we can help enhance the lives of military members and their families.

We appreciate you joining our cause. Your support sends a message of care and gratitude to those who serve to keep us safe. Together with the military members we would like to express to you our sincere appreciation for your event. We are already looking forward to next year!

"Fishin' in the Pines "

Sat. Sept. 27, 2008 Kids fishing has long been part of the Lake Cuyamaca history. Many people in San Diego have told us that trout fishing, as a kid, in the lake near Julian holds great memories. 2008 marks the 11th annual "Fishin' in the Pines Free Kids Derby." 660 kids along with their parents showed up under a beautiful sunny, windless day to enjoy the 2000 lbs of trout that was stocked in the lake. The fishing was exceptional and all those attending had a fabulous time! The crew from All Outdoors Radio were a great help. They put out the word all over San Diego as well as contacting our national sponsors, so please listen in Sunday afternoons from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on KCBQ 1170 AM. call in and talk to John, Ed or Ron and you might win a free motorboat rental from Lake Cuyamaca. Thanks again to the San Diego Anglers for a spectacular job of barbecuing the fish, hot dogs and all the fixin's. None of this could have happened without the support of the Lake Cuyamaca staff and all of the volunteers that spent countless hours putting this event together. Thank you John, Julie, Sean, Roy, Pat, Ed, Charley, Chris, Arlene, Linda, Earl, Becky, Michael, Willard, Georgia and of course the Board of Directors from the Lake Cuyamaca Recreation and Park District.

On August 28, 2007 San Diego Anglers President Allen Schneid presented a check for $5000.00 to Kelsey Warren, Event Coordinator for the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation for Polinsky Children's Center in San Diego. Polinsky Children's Center is a 24 hour facility run by the County of San Diego and is for children up to 18 years of age who are temporarily separated from their families for their own safety or when parents cannot provide care. Each month over 300 children are admitted to the center.

Thanks to the efforts of the OBB committee headed up in previous years by Mike Kezele and Dwayne Patenaude, and supported by dozens of volunteers, sponsors, and participants, The San Diego Anglers is able to help the Polinsky Children's Center provide services to children who have been physically, sexually, and or emotionally abused, medically or physically neglected, and or have no parent or guardian.

Polinsky Children's Center is the primary Charity supported by the San Diego Anglers Open Bay Bass Tournament which is held each January. With Allen and Kelsey is Bill Davidson, Past President of The San Diego Anglers, and current Co-Chair for the tournament which is scheduled for January 19, 2008.

Club members who would like to join in on this or other club events should contact Bill Davidson or any of the board members listed on the CONTACT page of this website.
